EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning copperplate engraving depicts the Bust of the Goddess Isis Magna Mater, a captivating representation of the Egyptian goddess Isis in Roman mythology. The image is taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary, published in London in 1818. The intricately detailed engraving was created by C. Knight based on a drawing by H. Howard. Isis, the Egyptian goddess of motherhood, magic, and fertility, was one of the most widely worshipped deities in the ancient world. She was often depicted as a throne-sitting queen wearing a throne-like headdress adorned with the horns of a cow, symbolizing her role as the mother of the pharaoh and the protector of the Nile. The Magna Mater, or Great Mother, was a title given to several goddesses in the ancient world, including Cybele and Isis. This epithet emphasizes their role as the universal mother, the giver of life, and the nurturer of all. The Bust of Isis Magna Mater presented here showcases the goddess' serene and benevolent expression, her intricately braided hair, and her elegant headdress. The engraving captures the timeless beauty and power of this revered deity, making it a valuable addition to any collection of mythology or ancient art.
