The daughter of Sir Philip Dunn, she was born in London and educated at a convent, which she left at the age of fourteen. Although she came from an upper-class background, in 1959 she moved to Battersea and made friends in the neighbourhood and worked for a time in a sweets factory. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the pages of London Life magazine, published in 1965, Nell Dunn, the English playwright, screenwriter, and author, is seen in an elegant yet understated outfit that perfectly encapsulates the fashionable yet unassuming spirit of the 1960s. Born in London in 1936, Dunn came from an upper-class background but chose to leave her convent education at the age of fourteen and move to Battersea in 1959. It was in this working-class neighborhood that she found her inspiration, making friends and even working for a time in a sweets factory. The experiences of her new community would later inform much of Dunn's groundbreaking work. Married to writer Jeremy Sandford from 1957 to 1979, they had three sons together. Dunn's best-known works, "Up the Junction" and "Poor Cow," were published in the late 1960s and brought her critical acclaim for their raw and honest portrayals of working-class life in London. In this photograph, Dunn's fashionable yet understated outfit reflects the swinging 60s, a time of social and cultural change. The fashion of the era, with its emphasis on individuality and self-expression, is on full display in this image. The photograph serves as a snapshot of a pivotal moment in both Dunn's personal and professional life, as well as a glimpse into the historical context of the 1960s. The image is a testament to Dunn's unique ability to capture the essence of her community and translate it into powerful and enduring works of literature.
