The Three Dancers

The Three Dancers (1945). Luke, John 1906-1975. The Three Dancers is a prime example of Luke?s highly stylised and precise technique. The flowing lines of the dancers? arms, the bending boughs of the bush and the wavy undulations of the landscape, create the rhythm of the dance in a powerfully immediate way. The subtle finish and intense colour derives from the use of tempera, a medium Luke began experimenting with in 1933 and which fascinated him. By the 1940s, Luke had become virtually obsessed with the craftsmanship involved in creating works like The Three Dancers. Indeed, such was his preoccupation with the making of the picture that he produced lengthy notes on its technical construction. Luke spent almost his entire career living and working in Belfast with the exception of a period in County Armagh during the war years. This picture, painted whilst he was living there, is the first of a number of almost visionary compositions produced in the mid-1940s possibly inspired by the closing stages of the war. Date: 1945

The Three Dancers

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating and rhythmic masterpiece by Northern Irish artist, John Luke, painted in 1945. This artwork is a testament to Luke's distinctive, highly stylized, and meticulous technique. The interplay of the dancers' graceful, flowing arms, the sinuous bends of the surrounding bush, and the undulating landscape, all come together to create a powerful sense of dance and movement. Luke's use of tempera, a traditional painting medium he began experimenting with in 1933, adds to the subtle finish and intense color of the piece. By the 1940s, Luke had become deeply engrossed in the craftsmanship of his work, as evidenced by the extensive notes he wrote on the technical construction of "The Three Dancers." Throughout his career, Luke lived and worked primarily in Belfast, with the exception of a period spent in County Armagh during the war years. This painting, created during that time, marks the beginning of a series of almost visionary compositions produced in the mid-1940s, possibly influenced by the closing stages of the war. "The Three Dancers" is a mesmerizing work of art that invites the viewer to appreciate the intricacies of Luke's technique and the harmony of its composition. Its vibrant colors and fluid lines continue to captivate and inspire, making it a must-see for anyone interested in modern Irish art.
