EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century print depicts Nannette Schiller, the beloved sister of the renowned German playwright and poet Friedrich Schiller. Nannette, born in Marbach am Neckar, Württemberg, Germany, in 1761, was the eldest of ten children in the Schiller family. Her striking beauty and grace were often the subject of her brother's poetry and plays, most notably in his famous work "The Robbers," where she served as the model for the character Catherine. Nannette's life was marked by tragedy and heartache. At the age of 17, she married Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin, a promising poet and friend of Schiller's. However, their marriage was fraught with difficulties, and Hölderlin's mental health began to deteriorate. Nannette remained devoted to him until his death in 1806. Despite the challenges in her personal life, Nannette continued to be a source of inspiration for her brother. Schiller wrote of her in his poem "To Nannette," expressing his deep admiration and love for his sister. The poem's opening lines read, "O fairer than all that is fair, / Thou art the image of my heart." This beautiful print captures the essence of Nannette Schiller's enchanting beauty and the profound bond she shared with her brother. It serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and emotions that define the human experience, and the enduring power of family ties.
