The image portrays Notre Dame de Lourdes, or Our Lady of Lourdes, as described by Bernadette Soubirous during her famous apparitions in 1858 in the grotto of Massabielle, near Lourdes, France. Bernadette, a young shepherdess, reported having 18 visions of the Virgin Mary between February 11 and July 16, 1858. During these encounters, the Virgin Mary instructed Bernadette to dig in the ground and drink from the spring that flowed from it.
