EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning mosaic, depicting the mythological tale of Hylas and the Nymphs, dates back to the late 2nd century B.C. or early Imperial Period. Discovered in Tor Bella Monaca, Rome, this intricate work of art is now proudly displayed at the National Roman Museum, Palazzo Massimo. The mosaic, made up of thousands of carefully arranged tesserae or small pieces of glass, stone, or other materials, once adorned a Roman pavement. The mythological scene portrayed in the mosaic is derived from Greek mythology. Hylas, an Argonaut and companion of Jason, was known for his exceptional beauty. One day, while Hylas was collecting water from a spring, he was lured away by a group of enchanted nymphs. They were captivated by his charm and decided to keep him with them forever. Jason, upon realizing Hylas was missing, searched for him relentlessly but to no avail. This mosaic captures the moment when Hylas is being led away by the nymphs, with one reaching out to touch him. The intricate details in the mosaic, from the flowing robes of Hylas and the nymphs to the delicate leaves and flowers in the background, showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of the Roman artisans. The use of various colors and textures in the tesserae adds depth and dimension to the scene. This mosaic is not only a testament to the rich history and artistic prowess of ancient Rome but also a captivating reminder of the enduring allure of Greek mythology.
