EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite Meuble de Salon 4, circa 1860, is a fine example of the intricate craftsmanship and elegance of Louis XVI style furniture. The marquetterie technique, a decorative art form involving the application of small pieces of veneer to create intricate patterns and designs, is showcased to stunning effect in this cupboard for the living room. The Meuble de Salon, or salon cabinet, was a versatile piece of furniture commonly used to store and display valuable items, such as porcelain, silver, and other decorative objects. This particular piece, dating from the mid-19th century, would have been a prized possession in a wealthy French household. The accompanying pot stand, which can be seen resting atop the cabinet, is a charming and functional addition to the design. The stand, also in the Louis XVI style, features intricate marquetry patterns and ornate gilt-bronze mounts, perfectly complementing the cabinet below. The Louis XVI style, which emerged during the reign of King Louis XVI (1774-1792), is characterized by its opulence and grandeur. This style was revived in the 19th century, as the Romantic movement led to a renewed appreciation for the elegance and refinement of the Ancien Régime. This beautiful Meuble de Salon 4, with its intricate marquetry and elegant design, is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Louis XVI style and the artisanal craftsmanship of the past. It invites us to imagine the grandeur of a bygone era, where such intricately crafted pieces were cherished possessions in the homes of the wealthy and the aristocracy.
