EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of respite for explorer George De Long (1841-1881) and his crew aboard the USS Jeanette during their groundbreaking Arctic expedition in 1879-1881. Amidst the endless daylight of the Arctic summer, the midnight sun appears to 'bed down for the night,' casting a warm glow over the icy waters and the ship's deck. De Long, an American naval officer and scientist, made history by providing the first concrete evidence that Arctic sea ice is not stationary but is instead moved by powerful ocean currents. This discovery challenged the prevailing belief that the Arctic was a frozen, uninhabitable wasteland. In this image, De Long is seen resting against a makeshift table, a rifle and dog by his side, while a crew member tend to the ship's gun. The harsh Arctic conditions are evident in the background, with the frozen sea stretching out to the horizon and the ship's sails and rigging standing still against the backdrop of the midnight sun. Despite the progress made during the expedition, the USS Jeanette was eventually trapped in the ice and eventually sank, resulting in the tragic loss of all but five of the crew. Nevertheless, De Long's discoveries paved the way for further exploration and understanding of the Arctic region. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of early polar explorers and the enduring allure of the Arctic frontier.
