LCC-LFB Royal Review in Hyde Park by Edward VII

London Fire Brigade annual review, Hyde Park. King Edward VII had, as Prince of Wales, always been interested in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade and its work, often covertly going to fires with Captain Massey Shaw. Once he was monarch this sometimes dangerous activity ceased, but King Edward continued his support for Londons firefighters. Here he, Queen Alexandra and the royal children arrive for the 1909 Annual Brigade Review in Hyde Park. Note the brass helmeted young prince. These were major public events where the Brigade, by then the London Fire Brigade, would perform drills and parade past the monarch, after which the King and Queen would present gallantry and long service medals

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in London's firefighting history as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, accompanied by their royal children, arrive at Hyde Park for the 1909 Annual Review of the London Fire Brigade. As Prince of Wales, Edward had always been an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, even secretly joining firefighting efforts with Captain Massey Shaw. With his ascension to the throne, such dangerous activities came to an end, but his commitment to London's firefighters remained unwavering. The Annual Review was a major public event where the Brigade, now known as the London Fire Brigade, would showcase their skills through drills and parades. The monarch and queen would inspect the firemen, presenting gallantry and long service medals as a token of appreciation for their dedication and bravery. In this image, the young Prince of Wales can be seen wearing a brass helmet, reflecting his early fascination with the fire service. The serene atmosphere of Hyde Park, the smart uniforms of the firefighters, and the regal presence of the royal family create a striking contrast, highlighting the importance of the fire brigade in the heart of the community during the Edwardian era.
