EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the portraits of four brave heroes of the Anglo-Zulu War: General Sir Henry Smith-Dorrien, Lieutenant-Colonel John Chard, Lieutenant-Colonel Evelyn Wood Bromhead, and Sergeant-Major William Dartnell. The image was taken in the aftermath of the famous Battle of Rorke's Drift, which took place on January 22, 1879, in Natal, South Africa. The Battle of Rorke's Drift is renowned for being one of the most heroic actions in British military history. Outnumbered and vastly outgunned, a small garrison of British soldiers, led by Chard and Bromhead, successfully defended the mission station against an intense assault by the Zulu army. The heroism displayed by these men, particularly during the night attack, resulted in 11 Victoria Crosses being awarded, the most for any single engagement in the British Army's history. Smith-Dorrien, who was the commander of the British forces in Natal at the time, arrived at Rorke's Drift the day after the battle. In this photograph, he is shown wearing the Order of the Bath star and sash, signifying his knighthood. Chard, who had been the acting commander during the battle, is wearing the brevet rank of colonel. Bromhead, who took command when Chard was wounded, is wearing the brevet rank of lieutenant-colonel. Dartnell, the sergeant-major, is shown in his dress uniform. The lantern in the foreground adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to the image, while the rough, textured background and the men's stern expressions convey the intensity and gravity of the situation they had faced. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the bravery and resilience displayed by these heroes during the Battle of Rorke's Drift, an event that would go down in history as a defining moment in the Anglo-Zulu War.
