EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant and captivating portrait depicts Catherine Rebecca Grey, later Lady Catherine Manners (1767-1852), the wife of Sir William Manners, later Lord Huntingtower, and mother of the seventh Earl of Dysart. The portrait, created in the late 18th century, captures the sophistication and grace of Lady Catherine, who was a prominent figure in British society during the Regency era. Born Catherine Rebecca Grey on December 15, 1767, she was the eldest daughter of the 2nd Earl of Stamford and the Hon. Catherine Greyson. In 1791, she married Sir William Manners, the heir to the Manners estates, and became Lady Catherine Manners. The couple had five children together, including the future Earl of Dysart. Lady Catherine's striking appearance is evident in this portrait, with her piercing blue eyes, high cheekbones, and elegant neckline accentuating her delicate features. Her fashionable hairstyle, adorned with intricate curls and a feathered headpiece, is a testament to the opulence and extravagance of the Regency period. Despite her privileged upbringing, Lady Catherine was known for her kindness and generosity. She was a patron of the arts and supported various charitable causes, including the establishment of a school for girls in her husband's estate. Her husband, Sir William, was a prominent politician and served as a Member of Parliament for several years. Lady Catherine's life was marked by tragedy, as she lost her husband in 1811 and her eldest son, the sixth Earl of Dysart, in 1825. She continued to reside at Belvoir Castle, the Manners family seat, until her death on December 13, 1852. This portrait is a beautiful and poignant reminder of Lady Catherine's life and legacy as a beloved wife, mother, and philanthropist during the Regency era.
