EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts John Heywood, an English playwright and epigrammatist, in the late 16th century. Born in 1497, Heywood was a prolific writer who contributed significantly to the development of English literature during the Elizabethan era. He is best known for his collection of witty and clever proverbs and epigrams, which were widely popular in his time and continue to be quoted today. Heywood's career began in the late 1530s when he served as a page to Cardinal Wolsey. He later became a schoolmaster and a tutor to the children of the Earl of Arundel. In 1546, he published his first book, "Proverbs," which contained over 400 proverbs in English and Latin. This work was followed by several other publications, including plays, poetry, and translations. One of Heywood's most famous plays is "The Four Prentices of London," which was first performed in 1546. The play tells the story of four apprentices who plot to kill their masters and share their wealth. It was a popular success and was frequently performed throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. Heywood's epigrams were also widely admired for their cleverness and wit. One of his most famous epigrams is "On the Blessed Sacrament," which reads, "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." This epigram refers to the Catholic belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, which was a controversial issue during Heywood's time. Despite his success, Heywood's later years were marked by financial difficulties. He died in poverty in 1638, but his legacy as a playwright and epigrammatist continued to inspire generations of writers and thinkers. Today, his works are studied and appreciated for their linguistic innovation and cultural significance.
