Born on February 14, 1836, in London, England, Thurston embarked on a career in the British Civil Service, which eventually led him to Australia. He arrived in New South Wales in 1864 as the Colonial Secretary, a position he held for 12 years. During this time, he played a crucial role in the establishment of the University of Sydney and the Sydney Technical College. In 1889, Thurston was appointed as the Governor of New South Wales, succeeding Sir John Robertson. His governorship was characterized by a focus on public works and infrastructure development. Thurston oversaw the construction of the Tasman Bridge in Hobart, Tasmania, and the expansion of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He also played a significant role in the establishment of the Royal Society of New South Wales.
