EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia-toned photograph captures the profile of Joseph-Charles-Paul Bonaparte, affectionately known as Prince Napoleon or Plon-Plon, the second son of Jerome Bonaparte, King of Westphalia, and his wife Catherine of Württemberg. Born on March 20, 1784, in Rome, Italy, Joseph-Charles-Paul was the nephew of the legendary French military and political leader, Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite his noble lineage, Joseph-Charles-Paul's life was marked by a series of misfortunes. After the fall of the Napoleonic Empire, his father was exiled, and the family moved to the United States, where they settled in Bordentown, New Jersey. Joseph-Charles-Paul received a decent education but struggled to find a stable career and financial security. He eventually moved to Europe, where he lived a rather obscure life, often relying on the charity of his relatives. The photograph, taken in 1891, depicts Joseph-Charles-Paul in a formal suit, with a plump, round face and a thoughtful expression. His nickname, Plon-Plon, was a term of endearment used by his family and close friends. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, despite the shadows cast by his famous surname, lived a complex and intriguing existence. Joseph-Charles-Paul Bonaparte passed away on January 24, 1844, in Paris, France. His legacy, though not as grand as that of his famous uncle, remains an intriguing chapter in the history of the Bonaparte family.
