EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the devastating aftermath of the bombardment of Izmir, Turkey, in March 1915, during the First World War. The city, then known as Smyrna, was a major port and cultural hub in the Ottoman Empire. In this photograph, taken just 24 hours after the attack by British cruisers, the extent of the destruction is clear. The once vibrant and bustling cityscape is reduced to a scene of desolation and ruin. Buildings, many of them historic and cultural landmarks, lie in smoldering ruins, their facades blown apart by the explosives. The streets are empty, save for the occasional figure moving through the debris. The light of the setting sun casts an eerie glow over the scene, highlighting the devastation wrought by the bombardment. The campaign, which was part of the larger Gallipoli campaign, marked a significant turning point in the war for the Ottoman Empire and had far-reaching consequences for the region. The bombardment of Izmir is a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring impact of conflict on communities and their histories.
