EDITORS COMMENTS
This cross-sectional illustration, titled "House of Commons - Debating Chamber & Division Lobbies (Sheet no.3. Ventillation of the House of Commons)" was created by W. Yates in the year 1907. The intricately detailed print offers a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the House of Commons during a parliamentary session. The debating chamber, located at the center of the image, is where Members of Parliament engage in heated debates, deliberating on various legislative matters. The chamber is adorned with ornate wooden desks, each equipped with a green leather writing surface and a brass nameplate bearing the name of the respective Member. The Speaker's chair, prominently placed at the presiding table, symbolizes the authority and impartiality of the chair. Surrounding the debating chamber are the division lobbies, essential spaces where Members cast their votes on proposed legislation. The lobbies are separated by a central dividing line, with one side representing the 'Ayes' and the other the 'Noes'. Members enter the lobbies, pass through the glass doors, and press the appropriate button to register their vote. The ventilation system, depicted at the top of the illustration, plays a crucial role in maintaining the air quality within the House of Commons. The system is designed to ensure the removal of stale air and the introduction of fresh air, contributing to a healthier and more productive environment for the Members. This print, taken from a 1907 pamphlet, offers a unique perspective into the parliamentary process, providing a glimpse into the history and architecture of the House of Commons.
