EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures the regal beauty and grace of Infanta Maria Anna of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, painted by the renowned Spanish artist Diego Velázquez in 1660. Born in 1634 as the eldest daughter of the Spanish king Philip IV and his fourth wife, Infanta Maria Anna was destined for a grand marriage to secure the Habsburg dynasty's interests in Central Europe. At the age of 15, she was married to the 23-year-old Leopold I, the future Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia. Velázquez, the chief painter to King Philip IV, was commissioned to create this portrait to celebrate the young queen's arrival in Hungary. The painting reflects the artist's mastery of the Baroque style, with its dramatic use of light and shadow, intricate detail, and lifelike representation of the subject. Infanta Maria Anna is depicted wearing the insignia of the Order of the Starry Cross, the highest order of chivalry in Hungary, symbolizing her new role as queen. Her elegant attire, adorned with pearls and precious stones, further emphasizes her royal status. The Infanta Maria Anna's reign in Hungary and Bohemia was marked by peace and prosperity, and she was highly regarded for her intelligence, piety, and generosity. This portrait not only serves as a testament to her beauty and regal presence but also as a significant historical document of the Habsburg dynasty's European political alliances during the Baroque era.
