EDITORS COMMENTS
Once upon a time in the early 1900s, the enchanting world of children's literature came alive through the illustrations of Edwardian artist, Arthur Rackham. In this image from 1909, Rackham brings to life the legendary figure of Rumpelstiltskin from the German fairytale of the same name. The scene is set before a quaint, old house, where a fire burns brightly in the hearth. The air is filled with the scent of woodsmoke and the promise of a cozy, magical tale. In the foreground, an indescribably ridiculous little man hops on one leg, his hat perched atop his head, and sings merrily to himself. His coat is adorned with intricate patterns and bell-like accents, adding to his otherworldly appearance. Rumpelstiltskin, a goblin or imp, is a character from an ancient German folktale where he tricks a miller's daughter into revealing the name of her first child in exchange for spinning straw into gold. In this illustration, Rackham captures the mischievous and whimsical nature of the character, as he revels in the warmth of the fire, seemingly unfazed by the harsh winter night. This image, with its intricate details and rich storytelling, is a testament to the power of children's literature and the enduring allure of fairytales. It invites us to step into a world of magic, wonder, and imagination, where the impossible becomes possible, and the impossible becomes believable.
