HMS Marlborough: A Grand Sight - Last Look Up the Bosphorus, Istanbul, 1923 This evocative photograph captures the majestic HMS Marlborough taking her final look up the Bosphorus Strait before departing from Istanbul, Turkey, in the early 1920s. The Iron Duke-class battleship, named after the renowned British military leader John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, was built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, HMS Marlborough played a significant role in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). She also took part in the Greco-Turkish War. In this image, the Union Jack flies proudly from the ship's mast, while her powerful gun turrets and imposing silhouette dominate the scene. The Bosphorus Strait, a vital waterway connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean, is a fitting backdrop for this grand display of British naval power. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the rich maritime history shared between Britain and Turkey, as well as the significant role the Royal Navy played in shaping the political landscape of the Mediterranean and the wider world during the 1920s.
