EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures George Forbes, the sixth Earl of Granard (1760-1837), a prominent Scottish military commander during the Napoleonic Wars. Born into the noble Forbes family, Granard's military career began early, serving in the American Revolutionary War before seeing action against the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic forces. During the Peninsular War, Granard distinguished himself as a brave and capable leader, particularly during the Battle of Talavera in 1809. His troops, part of the British Army's 7th Light Dragoons, charged against the French forces with great courage, turning the tide of the battle in favor of the Allies. Granard's military prowess did not go unnoticed, and he was later appointed as the Governor of Gibraltar, a strategic British territory located on the southern tip of Spain. However, his tenure was marred by controversy, as he was accused of misappropriating funds and mishandling supplies. Despite these allegations, Granard continued to serve in various military capacities, eventually retiring from the army in 1825. This photograph, taken likely in the early 19th century, captures the Earl of Granard in his prime, dressed in the uniform of a British Army general. The stern expression on his face and the piercing gaze of his eyes convey a sense of determination and leadership, making it a fitting representation of this important figure in Scottish and British military history.
