EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of historic discovery as Eric the Red, the Icelandic chieftain and explorer, sets foot on the shores of Greenland in the late 10th century. With a determined gaze and a longship at his back, Eric is depicted as a bold and intrepid figure, leading his Norsemen towards a new land filled with promise and opportunity. Born in Iceland around 950 AD, Eric the Red was exiled from his homeland following a violent feud. Seeking a new beginning, he sailed westward into the uncharted waters of the North Atlantic, eventually reaching the icy shores of Greenland. Once settled, he established the first Norse colony in the New World, some 500 years before Christopher Columbus's famous voyage to the Americas. This image is believed to represent the pivotal moment when Eric and his men first set foot on Greenland, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Norse history. The longship, with its distinctive dragon head and ornate decorations, symbolizes the ingenuity and seafaring skills of the Norsemen, who would go on to explore and settle vast territories in the Arctic. Eric's son, Leif Eriksson, would later follow in his father's footsteps, becoming the first European to reach North America, around 1000 AD. This groundbreaking discovery, which predates Columbus's voyage by nearly 500 years, challenges the popular belief that Christopher Columbus was the first European to reach the Americas. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich and fascinating history of Norse exploration and the indomitable spirit of the Vikings, who braved the unknown waters of the North Atlantic to expand their horizons and leave a lasting legacy on the world.
