EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages," published in 1796, we find an intriguing scene of Emperor Romulus Augustus in full battle regalia, accompanied by a Roman consul and the rich spoils of war, known as the Spolia Opima. Romulus Augustus, the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, is depicted in the image wearing a magnificent suit of armor, adorned with intricate designs and embellishments. His helmet, adorned with the image of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and war, sits atop his head, while a flowing cloak, draped over his shoulders, adds a regal touch to his appearance. In his right hand, Romulus Augustus holds aloft a triumphant standard, symbolizing his military victory. The consul, dressed in the traditional toga and wearing a military cloak, stands beside him, his hand raised in a gesture of salute or acknowledgement. Behind the two figures, a triumphal arch is depicted, adorned with the spoils of war, including captured weapons, shields, and other symbols of Roman military might. These spoils, known as the Spolia Opima, were the rich booty taken from the enemy in a battle that was considered to be the first total Roman victory. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of ancient Rome, showcasing the grandeur and military prowess of its leaders. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of the handcolored copperplate engraving add to the image's captivating allure, making it a valuable historical document and an intriguing work of art.
