EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished figure of English sculptor Edward Hodges Baily (1788-1867) as he signs an autograph for an admirer. Born in London in 1788, Baily was a prolific and influential sculptor of the Romantic period, known for his masterful portraits in marble and bronze. He studied under the renowned sculptor John Flaxman and quickly gained a reputation for his skill and artistry. Baily's most famous work is the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington, which stands in Trafalgar Square in London. The statue, completed in 1843, is considered one of the finest equestrian statues in the world and is a testament to Baily's exceptional talent. The statue's lifelike and dynamic representation of the Duke on horseback was groundbreaking for its time and continues to inspire awe and admiration today. Baily's other notable works include portraits of Sir Walter Scott, Lord Nelson, and the Duke of Sussex. He was also a founding member of the Royal Academy and played a significant role in the development of the British art scene. This photograph, taken in 1867, the year of Baily's death, provides a rare glimpse into the life of this remarkable artist. The image captures the wisdom and experience etched into his face, as well as the dedication and passion that drove him to create some of the most enduring works of art in British history.
