Dr. Ernst Ziehm - A Prominent Political Figure in Pre-War Danzig
EDITORS COMMENTS
Dr. Ernst Ziehm (1867-1962) is depicted in this striking photograph, taken during his tenure as President of the Senate of the Free City of Danzig from 1931 to 1933. The Free City of Danzig, located on the Baltic Sea, was an autonomous political entity established under the Treaty of Versailles following World War I. Dr. Ziehm, a renowned lawyer and politician, served as Danzig's Senate President during a tumultuous period in European history. The interwar years were marked by political instability, economic hardship, and rising tensions between the major powers. In Danzig, this instability manifested in the form of growing unrest among the city's Polish and German populations. Despite these challenges, Dr. Ziehm worked tirelessly to maintain peace and stability within the Free City. He was known for his commitment to the rule of law and his efforts to promote cooperation between Danzig's various political factions. However, his tenure was ultimately cut short by the political upheavals of the late 1930s. In 1933, the Nazi Party, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, gained control of the Danzig Senate. Dr. Ziehm, a staunch opponent of the Nazis, was forced to resign. He went into exile in Switzerland, where he continued to advocate for peace and democracy. This photograph captures Dr. Ziehm in the prime of his political career, standing confidently before a backdrop of Danzig's historic cityscape. Despite the challenges he faced, his commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles shines through. Today, he is remembered as a symbol of the resilience and determination of the people of Danzig during a turbulent era in European history.
