EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in Spanish royal history, as Don Juan, Count of Barcelona and Duke of Seville (Don Juan de Borbón y Battenberg, 1913-1993), shares a tender moment with his young son, Juan Carlos, during their exile in Portugal in the 1960s. Don Juan, the claimant to the Spanish throne, had been ousted by General Francisco Franco in 1931, and spent decades in exile with his family. In this image, the father and son stand together, their gazes locked, as they face an uncertain future. Juan Carlos, born in 1938, would eventually succeed his father as King of Spain in 1975, following Franco's death and the transition to democracy. The young prince received his education in Switzerland and Spain, and later served in the Spanish military before being named heir to the throne. His reign, which lasted until 2014, was marked by modernization, economic growth, and a commitment to democratic governance. Despite the challenges and hardships of their exile, the bond between Don Juan and Juan Carlos remained strong. This photograph serves as a reminder of their unwavering love and dedication to each other and to the Spanish monarchy, which would eventually be restored to its rightful place in Spanish society.
