EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is taken from Wynkyn de Worde's 1496 publication of the "Diues et Pauper," or "Dives and the Pauper," a retelling of the biblical parable found in the Book of Luke (16:19-31). The parable tells the story of the rich man Dives, who ignores the beggar Lazarus lying at his gate, while Lazarus longs to be fed from Dives' table. After both men die, they are placed in opposite realms: Dives in torment and Lazarus in paradise. The image showcases the stark contrast between the two men's lives. Dives, dressed in rich clothing and adorned with a jeweled crown, sits in a sumptuously furnished room, oblivious to the suffering Lazarus at his gate. Lazarus, clad in rags and covered in sores, lies at the doorstep, holding a begging bowl and reaching out with a desperate plea. The dogs lick his sores, offering him some comfort in his misery. The illustration is a testament to the power of the parable, which has remained a powerful reminder of the importance of compassion and kindness throughout history. The image, created during the late medieval period, is a reflection of the religious and social climate of the time, emphasizing the moral duty to care for the less fortunate. Wynkyn de Worde was a prominent English printer, known for his contributions to the early English printing industry. His publication of "Diues et Pauper" was one of the earliest printed versions of the parable, making it an invaluable historical artifact. This illustration, with its vivid details and poignant message, continues to captivate and inspire viewers, reminding us of the enduring power of the parables in the Christian faith and the importance of treating all people with kindness and compassion.
