This handcolored engraving depicts a Dhole, or Ceylon Wild Dog, of the unknown species Chryseus ceylonicus. The image was drawn from a stuffed specimen that originated in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and was acquired by Sir William Jardine's Naturalist Library. The intricately detailed engraving, produced by William Lizars in Edinburgh in 1839, showcases the Dhole's distinctive features, including its long snout, pointed ears, and striped coat. The Dhole, scientifically known as Cuon alpinus, is a social and elusive canid native to Asia. However, the identification of this particular specimen as Chryseus ceylonicus remains uncertain. Some taxonomists believe it may represent a distinct subspecies or population of the Dhole found in Ceylon during that time. Colonel Charles Hamilton Smith, a renowned British military officer and naturalist, made the original drawing of the Dhole from which this engraving was made. Smith was an accomplished artist and naturalist, and his work was widely published in various scientific journals and natural history books during the 19th century.
