EDITORS COMMENTS
Crecy (Dupray) 1346: The Decisive Defeat of the French by the English at the Battle of Crecy The Battle of Crecy, fought on August 26, 1346, is considered one of the most significant engagements in medieval warfare. This historic print from Mary Evans Picture Library depicts the fierce hand-to-hand combat that ensued between the English and French armies, leading to the decisive defeat of the French. The English, under the command of King Edward III, had taken advantage of their superiority in the use of longbows. The longbowmen, positioned in a defensive formation, rained arrows upon the advancing French cavalry, decimating their ranks before they could even engage in melee combat. The French, relying heavily on their armored knights, were taken aback by the initial volley of arrows and were forced to charge into the English lines. The ensuing hand-to-hand fighting was brutal and intense. The print captures the ferocity of the battle, with soldiers locked in close combat, swords clashing and shields crashing. Despite their armor, the French knights were no match for the English infantry, who fought with determination and skill. The defeat at Crecy was a turning point in the Hundred Years War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453. The English victory marked the first major defeat of the French and established their dominance in the conflict. The events of this battle would shape the course of European history for years to come. This print, titled 'Crecy (Dupray)', is a powerful reminder of the fierce and decisive battle that took place on that fateful August day in 1346. The image captures the raw emotion and intensity of the combat, making it a valuable addition to any historical collection.
