EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the stoic and resolute visage of Corporal Cyril Royston Guyton Bassett, VC (1892-1983), the first New Zealander to be awarded the Victoria Cross (VC), the highest and most prestigious decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces. The image, taken in the aftermath of Bassett's heroic actions during World War One, immortalizes the brave soldier who distinguished himself in the heat of battle. Born in New Zealand in 1892, Bassett enlisted in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1915, and was soon deployed to the Western Front. On the 13th of June, 1916, during the Battle of Morval, Corporal Bassett led his platoon in an attack on the German trenches. Despite being severely wounded, he continued to rally his men and single-handedly captured a machine gun post, saving countless lives. For his extraordinary bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the pinnacle of military honors. The photograph, taken in the years following the war, shows a mature and thoughtful Bassett, his steely gaze fixed on the horizon. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary men and women during times of conflict, and serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human condition. Corporal Bassett's legacy continues to inspire generations, and his story is an integral part of the rich tapestry of New Zealand and Commonwealth military history. This powerful photograph, with its evocative imagery and historical significance, is a must-have for any collection devoted to military history, World War One, or the history of New Zealand.
