EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two wading birds, the Common Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) and the Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio), in their natural habitat. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) published in Paris, France between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Common Moorhen, also known as the Eurasian Moorhen, is a widespread and adaptable bird found throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. With its distinctive red bill and legs, this bird is well-camouflaged among the vegetation of wetlands and marshes. The Common Moorhen is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of aquatic and terrestrial organisms. The Purple Swamphen, also known as the African Purple Swamphen or the African Moorhen, is a larger wading bird native to Africa, Madagascar, and the Indian subcontinent. This bird is characterized by its bright purple plumage, long legs, and distinctive red wattles. The Purple Swamphen is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including insects, mollusks, crustaceans, and plants. The intricate details of the birds' plumage and anatomical features are beautifully captured in this exquisite engraving, which was engraved by Madame Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and published by F.G. Levrault. The handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
