EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the enigmatic figure of Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, in the company of two Scottish ladies, Jenny Cameron and Flora Macdonald, during his exile in Scotland in the late 18th century. The young prince, dressed in the traditional Scottish tartan and wearing a plaid bonnet, gazes intently at the women, who are depicted in elegant, low-cut dresses with high necklines. The oval-shaped print, which dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, captures the romantic and rebellious spirit of the Young Pretender, who had claimed the throne of England, Scotland, and Ireland in the name of his father, James II, after the House of Hanover had seized the crown. Jenny Cameron, a Gaelic-speaking Highland woman, is shown holding a shawl, which she had reportedly used to disguise the prince during his escape from the British army following the failed Jacobite uprising of 1745. Flora Macdonald, another Highland woman, is depicted with a beguiling smile, having played a key role in helping the prince to evade capture by disguising him as her maid. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the Jacobite cause and the enduring allure of the romantic figure of Bonnie Prince Charlie, who continues to captivate the popular imagination to this day.
