This photograph depicts Cameron Verney Lovett, a brave and intrepid explorer, standing at the banks of the Lukuga River in Africa during his historic east-to-west crossing of the continent in 1875. Lovett's journey began at the eastern shores of Lake Victoria, then known as Lake Tanganyika, and culminated at the Atlantic Ocean.
