The soldier in this image, a member of the 11th Battalion, wears a new and unfamiliar piece of equipment that would become a crucial part of his uniform. The mask, with its distinctive filter canister and respirator, would protect him from the deadly gases that had begun to dominate the battlefields of Europe.
