Born on October 10, 1738, in Springfield, Pennsylvania, West is considered one of the most important figures in the history of American art. His impressive body of work spanned over eight decades, from the late 18th century through to the early 19th century. West's artistic talents were evident from an early age, and he began his training under the tutelage of local artist William Smith. In 1756, he traveled to London to continue his studies under the guidance of the renowned artist, Joshua Reynolds. During his time in Europe, West became a leading figure in the British art scene, and his works were highly sought after by the aristocracy and royalty. Despite his success in Europe, West's heart remained in America. He returned to the United States in 1791, where he was appointed as the first American painter to the king of England. West continued to produce masterpieces throughout his later years, often focusing on historical and mythological themes. This print, which dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, offers a rare glimpse into the private life of this remarkable artist.
