Benito Juárez Garcia, born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca, Mexico in 1806, rose to become one of Mexico's most prominent liberal politicians and served as President of Mexico from 1858 until his death in 1872. This stunning oil on canvas portrait captures Juárez in his presidential years, dressed in the formal attire of the time, with a stern yet determined expression on his face. The painting was created during his tenure in Chapultepec Castle, the historic fortress and presidential residence located in Mexico City's Federal District. Juárez's political career began in the 1830s when he became a member of the Constitutional Congress, advocating for the separation of church and state and the establishment of a secular government. He played a key role in the Reform War, which led to the liberal reforms of the 1850s and 1860s. During his presidency, he implemented numerous reforms, including the separation of church and state, the abolition of feudalism, and the establishment of civil marriage.
