EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the elegant facade of Bedford College for Women, located on York Place off Baker Street in London, around 1905. The building, which now serves as the Sherlock Holmes Hotel, was a significant institution of higher education for women during the Edwardian era. The neoclassical architecture of the building is a testament to the grandeur and sophistication of the time, with its tall columns, intricate detailing, and grand entrance. The women in the photograph, dressed in their finest attire, add to the sense of refinement and elegance, as they make their way along the paved sidewalk, chatting and laughing with one another. Bedford College was founded in 1849 and was one of the first institutions in the UK to offer higher education to women. It was affiliated with the University of London and was a pioneer in providing women with the same opportunities for academic achievement as their male counterparts. The college moved to Regent's Park in 1915, but this photograph offers a glimpse into its rich history and the important role it played in the education of women in London during the early 20th century.
