EDITORS COMMENTS
This statue portrays Augustus Caesar (63 BC-14 AD), the first Emperor of the Roman Empire. Born as Gaius Octavius Thurinus, he rose to power through political maneuvering and military prowess, earning the name Octavian. After the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC, Octavian formed an alliance with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, known as the Second Triumvirate, to establish order in Rome. However, following the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, Octavian emerged as the sole ruler, assuming the title Imperator Caesar Divi F. Augustus. Augustus' reign marked the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. He implemented numerous political and social reforms, including the establishment of the Pax Romana, a period of relative peace and stability that lasted for over two centuries. Augustus also assumed the role of Pontifex Maximus, the high priest of the Roman religion, further solidifying his position as a divine ruler. This ancient marble statue, discovered in Corinth, Greece, dates back to the 1st century AD. It depicts Augustus in the traditional toga and him wearing the laurel wreath, symbolizing his military victories. The statue's intricate details and lifelike features offer a glimpse into the character and persona of the founding emperor of Rome. Augustus' enduring legacy continues to shape European history and culture, making this artifact an invaluable piece of ancient history and art.
