EDITORS COMMENTS
Andres Hurtado de Mendoza, 3rd Marquis of Canete (1500-1561), was a prominent Spanish military and political figure during the 16th century in the Americas. Born in Spain, Mendoza rose through the ranks of the military to become a trusted advisor to the crown. In 1545, he was appointed as the fifth Viceroy of Peru, a position he held until 1552. During his tenure as Viceroy, Mendoza faced numerous challenges, including political unrest, indigenous rebellions, and natural disasters. He is best known for his role in quelling the rebellion led by Gonzalo Pizarro, the brother of Francisco Pizarro, the conquistador who had previously conquered the Inca Empire. Mendoza's successful suppression of the rebellion solidified Spanish control over Peru. This portrait of Andres Hurtado de Mendoza, 3rd Marquis of Canete, was likely created during his time as Viceroy of Peru. He is depicted wearing the armor and accoutrements of a Spanish military leader, reflecting his background and position. The portrait is now housed at the Catholic University of Quito in Ecuador, a testament to the enduring legacy of this important historical figure. Mendoza's life and career are significant in the history of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the image of power and authority that he projected during his time. The intricately detailed armor and the stern expression on his face convey a sense of strength and determination, making this a captivating work of art and an essential piece of historical documentation.
