EDITORS COMMENTS
All Hallows the Great: A Historical Snapshot of a London Landmark All Hallows the Great, located on Upper Thames Street in the heart of the City of London, is a church with a rich history that spans over seven centuries. First mentioned in 1235, the church was a significant religious and community hub for centuries. Tragically, it was destroyed during the Great Fire of London in 1666, which ravaged the city for four days and left a trail of devastation in its wake. Despite the destruction, the church was not forgotten. In the aftermath of the fire, the office of Sir Christopher Wren, the renowned English architect, was commissioned to rebuild the church. Wren's design, completed in 1684, was a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, with a magnificent dome and intricate stonework. The church stood proudly for over two centuries, serving as a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of adversity. However, by the late 19th century, the area around All Hallows the Great had become industrialized, and the church was deemed surplus to requirements. In 1894, it was sadly demolished, marking the end of an era for this historic place of worship. This photograph, taken before the demolition, offers a poignant reminder of the church's former glory. The intricate details of the stonework, the soaring dome, and the sense of history and tradition that emanates from the image, all serve to transport us back in time, to an era when All Hallows the Great was a cherished part of the City of London's rich tapestry.
