Alexander II, who ruled for 25 years until his assassination in 1881, is depicted in regal attire, surrounded by an array of dignitaries, clergy, and military officials. The coronation marked the beginning of Alexander's reign, which would bring significant reforms to Russia. Born in 1818, Alexander II ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Tsar Nicholas I. During his reign, he implemented a series of groundbreaking reforms, most notably the emancipation of the serfs in 1861. This marked the end of serfdom in Russia, a system that had kept millions in bondage for centuries. The reforms also included the establishment of a consultative assembly, the Zemstvo, which provided a platform for local self-governance, and the introduction of civil and criminal codes based on European legal principles.
