EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in January 1896, the Administrators of the British South Africa Company are depicted, with Dr Leander Starr Jameson (left) flanked by Cecil Rhodes and J.T. (Jack) Newton. Dr Jameson, a prominent figure in the exploration and colonization of Southern Africa, had recently been succeeded as Administrator of the British South Africa Company by Newton. Jameson's tenure as Administrator had been marked by his infamous raid on the Transvaal Republic, an attempt to overthrow the Boer government and establish British rule. The raid, which took place in late 1895, ultimately failed, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to British reputation. Despite the failure of the raid, Jameson remained a significant figure in the region, and his legacy would continue to shape the course of British colonialism in Southern Africa. Rhodes, a close ally of Jameson and a key figure in the British Empire's expansion into Southern Africa, would go on to become the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and the driving force behind the creation of the De Beers diamond mining company. Newton, who took over from Jameson as Administrator, faced the challenge of rebuilding the British South Africa Company's reputation and restoring order in the region following the raid. His tenure saw the implementation of a series of reforms aimed at improving the lives of the native population, including the establishment of native reserves and the introduction of a system of indirect rule. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of British colonialism in Southern Africa, with three of its most influential figures gathered together. The legacy of their actions would shape the region for generations to come.
