EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Terracotta bell-krater mixing bowl from the Late Classical period. Created around 400-380 BC, this Greek South Italian Apulian masterpiece is a true testament to ancient artistry. Crafted in terracotta and featuring red figure decoration, this 19 5/8 inch (49.9 cm) vase depicts various mythological scenes on both its obverse and reverse sides. On the obverse side, we witness Europa pleading with Zeus while Sarpedon, Hera, Hypnos, and Pasithea observe the dramatic exchange of emotions. The intricate details bring these mythical characters to life as they engage in an intense dialogue. The reverse side presents another enthralling scene where Europa's attendants watch as Hypnos approaches with Thanatos bringing a body. This particular decoration reflects elements from a lost play by Aischylos involving Carian warriors. The Liszt Collection has expertly captured the essence of this extraordinary artifact through their high-quality photo print. With impeccable attention to detail and vibrant colors that breathe new life into this ancient treasure, it allows us to appreciate the skill and creativity of those who crafted it over two millennia ago.
