Walther Rathenau, portrait by an unknown photographer from 1913, Germany Walther Rathenau (29 September 1867, Berlin - 24 June 1922, Berlin) was a German politician of the DDP party, writer and important industrialist of Jewish descent. A quote from Walther Rathenau describes very well the anti-Semitic mood and reality that was also omnipresent in the German Empire and influenced the lives of Jewish fellow citizens: In the youthful years of every German Jew there is a painful moment that he remembers for the rest of his life: when he realises for the first time that he has entered the world as a second-class citizen and that no amount of ability or merit can free him from this position.
