Tughra: Shah Muhammad bin Ibrahim Khan, al-muzaffar daima... 1648-1687. Creator: Unknown
Tughra: Shah Muhammad bin Ibrahim Khan, al-muzaffar daima (Sultan Mehmed, son of Ibrahim Khan, the eternally victorious; Calligraphy (Ottoman Turkish Signature), Single Page Manuscript, 1648-1687. A tughra is a formalized ornate signature or monogram at the top of a royal edict. This tughra has been cut off from the vertical scroll on which a proclamation of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV was written. Mehmed IV ruled during a time when the empire began to decline in power due to internal rivalries and the catastrophic military defeat at the Battle of Vienna in 1683. In bold gold lettering, " Mehmed, son of Ibrahim Khan, the Eternally Victorious" has been calligraphed in Turkish. These words form the structure of the design, which has been filled with colours, floral patterns, and topped with an architectural crown. A foliated sunburst in turquoise, gold, and silver augments the luxury of the monogram

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Tughra, specifically the signature of Shah Muhammad bin Ibrahim Khan, also known as Sultan Mehmed IV. Created between 1648 and 1687 by an unknown artist, this ornate calligraphy piece is a single page manuscript that once adorned a vertical scroll containing an edict from the Ottoman ruler. The Tughra itself represents the pinnacle of elegance and power in Ottoman culture. It features bold gold lettering forming the words "Mehmed, son of Ibrahim Khan, the Eternally Victorious" in Turkish script. The design is further enhanced with vibrant colors, intricate floral patterns, and crowned with an architectural motif. However, behind its artistic beauty lies a historical context. This particular Tughra belongs to Mehmed IV's reign during a tumultuous period for the Ottoman Empire. Internal rivalries and significant military defeats like the Battle of Vienna in 1683 marked a decline in their once formidable power. Despite these challenges faced by his empire at large, this exquisite Tughra serves as a testament to Sultan Mehmed IV's desire to maintain his authority and prestige through visual representation. Its luxurious embellishments include a foliated sunburst rendered in turquoise, gold, and silver - exuding opulence fit for royalty. Preserved through time with utmost care by Heritage Art/Heritage Images (not associated with any commercial use), this print allows us to marvel at both the aesthetic brilliance of Ottoman calligraphy and gain insight into one era's struggle for dominance amidst adversity.
