EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Toleware Document Box, created by the talented J. Howard Iams in 1938. The box, an exquisite example of American folk art from the 1930s, is displayed against a black background that enhances its vibrant colors and intricate design. The document box features a stunning floral motif, with delicate flowers adorning its surface. Painted with precision and care, each petal and leaf comes to life through the skillful use of watercolor graphite and gouache on paperboard. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, creating a truly remarkable piece. Japanning techniques were employed to give this artifact its glossy finish and protect it from wear over time. Varnished for added durability, this Toleware Document Box not only served as a functional item but also as an object of beauty within American homes during the thirties. Now preserved at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. , this heritage art piece reflects both the cultural significance of folk art in America and J. Howard Iams' artistic prowess. Its presence in the gallery serves as a testament to our country's rich artistic history. Through this photo print, viewers are transported back to 1938 when craftsmanship was highly valued and decorative objects like these brought joy into everyday lives. It stands as a reminder of our nation's creative spirit and enduring appreciation for handmade treasures such as this Toleware Document Box by J. Howard Iams.
