Teocalli Mountain, 1874. Creator: J. G. Smithwick
Teocalli Mountain, 1874. View of a peak in the Elk Mountains, part of the Rocky Mountain range, Colorado, USA. We pitch our tents near the base of an immense pyramid, capped with layers of red sandstone, which we name Teocalli, from the Aztec word, meaning " pyramid of sacrifice". The view from our camp is - we should say surpassing, could we remember or decide which of all the beauties we have is the grandest. Two hills incline toward the valley where we are stationed, ultimately falling into each others arms. Between their shoulders there is a broad gap, and, in the rear, the majestic form of the Teocalli reaches to heaven. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Teocalli Mountain, 1874" takes us back to the enchanting Elk Mountains in Colorado, USA. The creator of this masterpiece is none other than J. G. Smithwick himself. As we gaze upon the image, we find ourselves standing at the base of a colossal pyramid-shaped peak adorned with layers of striking red sandstone. The name Teocalli was bestowed upon this majestic mountain by our intrepid explorers due to its resemblance to an Aztec pyramid of sacrifice. Our campsite lies near the foot of this immense natural wonder, nestled between two rolling hills that seem to embrace each other tenderly before cascading into a picturesque valley. Through the gap formed by these embracing hills, our eyes are treated to a breathtaking view - the awe-inspiring Teocalli Mountain reaching towards the heavens in all its grandeur. It is difficult for us to determine which among all these mesmerizing sights is truly the most magnificent; their beauty overwhelms us. This extraordinary photograph comes from "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant and published in 1874 by D. Appleton and Company.
