EDITORS COMMENTS
Emilio Zito's Table Glass, created around 1940, is a stunning example of American decorative arts from the 1930s and 1940s. This hand-carved, multi-colored wood panel depicts a genre scene of houses and buildings, with a focus on the intricate detail of a brown house with a carved wooden mirror frame. The mirror itself is depicted as a looking glass, adding an element of reflection and depth to the composition. Zito's use of watercolor, graphite, and colored pencil on paperboard enhances the vibrant colors and textures of the scene, while the wood carving adds a tactile and heritage quality to the piece. The table glass is a testament to the artisanal craftsmanship of the era, with each line and curve expertly rendered by Zito's skilled hand. The scene is set in the United States, with the American flag flying proudly from one of the houses. The table glass transports us back in time to a simpler era, where handicraft and decorative arts held a prominent place in daily life. The intricate carving and decorative elements of the piece reflect the period's emphasis on beauty and attention to detail. The Table Glass is part of the Index of American Design, a comprehensive catalog of American decorative arts held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. This important work by Emilio Zito is a valuable addition to any collection of American art or decorative arts, and a testament to the artistic talent and creativity of the 20th century.
