Street scene with trees, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Street scene with trees, c1950. Terraced houses in London. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Street scene with trees, c1950" transports us back to the bustling terraced houses of London in the mid-20th century. Created by talented artist Shirley Markham, this piece showcases her unique style influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration from 1950 to 1952. During her time there, she had the privilege of being taught by Mervyn Peake, a writer, artist, poet, and illustrator himself. Her passion for drawing was further nurtured during visits to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome where she sketched classical buildings. After graduating from Central School of Art, Markham embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer. She lent her talents to various projects including book illustrations, comics cartoons, menus, and programmes. However promising her career may have been at that time period dominated by traditional gender roles expectations prevailed. In 1957 Markham made the difficult decision to give up her profession upon getting married. Middle-class women were often expected to prioritize their role as homemakers and mothers over pursuing their own ambitions outside the home. Unfortunately for art enthusiasts everywhere but understandable given societal pressures; this meant that Markham lacked confidence in returning to illustration despite her evident talent. For many years after leaving behind her artistic pursuits; Markham's portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when we are fortunate enough to witness its publication for the first time thanks to Heritage Images' dedication towards preserving cultural heritage without any commercial intentions
