Richard causing the gold and jewels to be weighed in his presence

Richard causing the gold and jewels to be weighed n his presence. Richard I (1157-1199) was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. From Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart, overseeing the weighing of gold and jewels in his presence. As one of England's most renowned monarchs, Richard's military prowess earned him the title "Lionheart" even before he ascended to the throne. This image offers a glimpse into his reign from 1189 to 1199. Despite spending little time in England during his rule, Richard embarked on the Third Crusade in 1190 and later engaged in battles to reclaim territories in France. His reputation as a fearless warrior and leader precedes him throughout history. In this engraving, we witness Richard's regal presence as he closely observes the meticulous weighing process. The scales symbolize justice and fairness under his rule, while the abundance of gold bars and jewelry represents wealth and power associated with royalty. This image not only showcases Richard's authority but also highlights his religious devotion. Christianity played a significant role during this era, evident by religious symbols present throughout the scene. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured by The Print Collector, we are reminded that King Richard I is remembered for more than just being another ruler; rather, he is celebrated for leaving an indelible mark through his courage on battlefields far from home.
