The Orangery, Kensington Palace, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham

The Orangery, Kensington Palace, c1950. The baroque Orangery, next to Kensington Palace in London, was built in 1704-1705, probably by Nicholas Hawksmoor. It had under-floor heating and was used as a conservatory for delicate plants. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Orangery, Kensington Palace" in the 1950s, captured by talented artist Shirley Markham. The baroque architecture of the Orangery, located adjacent to Kensington Palace in London, dates back to its construction between 1704 and 1705 under the supervision of Nicholas Hawksmoor. Notably, this stunning structure boasted innovative features like under-floor heating and served as a conservatory for delicate plants. Shirley Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London from 1950 to 1952, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration. During her time there, she had the privilege of being mentored by Mervyn Peake—a renowned writer, artist, poet, and illustrator. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden; Markham developed a distinctive style that reflected their creative prowess. Markham's passion for art extended beyond her studies as she embarked on inspirational trips to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome—sketching classical buildings along the way. After graduating from Central School of Art, she pursued a successful career as a graphic designer—creating book illustrations, comic cartoons menus, and programs. However promising her path seemed professionally, Makrham made the difficult decision to prioritize marriage in 1957—an expectation placed upon middle-class women during that era—to dedicate herself solely to raising children and managing household responsibilities. Despite possessing undeniable talent, Makrham lacked confidence when it came to returning to illustration after taking this break. For many years following her departure from professional artistry, the remarkable collection of Makrham's work remained tucked away in her family attic until now. This publication marks an exciting moment—the first time these hidden gems are shared with the world—allowing us all an opportunity to appreciate Shirley Makrham's extraordinary talent.
